Information in English
THE JAZZ MUSEUM
The museum was founded in 1999. It is situated in Strömsholm, about 120 km to the west of Stockholm. It is the only one of its kind in Europe, in fact it is one of just two or three in the world, the others are to be found in the USA.
The Jazz Museum consists of three parts: the collection, the concerts and the restaurant.
THE COLLECTION
The collection involves more than 7 500 items. Recently it has been increased with the music property left by the famous pianoplayer and entertainer Charlie Norman, that is more than 1500 items of a special value. And more is to come to be registered. Donators are generous, and we highly appreciate that and we will do our very best to take care of and present their gifts.
THE CONCERTS
Since the start more than 500 concerts have been arranged outdoors and about a hundred indoors. This makes probably the museum the biggest promotor for outdoor jazz music events in Sweden. Last summer was a success. More than 50 concerts intrigued masses of listeners to show up.
THE RESTAURANT
The Royal Garden Café & Restaurant is famous for its food, influenced by the Louisiana kitchen with its creole and cajun dishes.
MORE TO BE NOTICED
- The Anita O´Day Prize has been founded on the initiative of Mona and Anders H Pers. The museum will once a year award a female singer, who in her repertoire also has the courage to sing in the tradition of the early days up to the 60ies. The prize is 1000 dollars. The first singer to be awarded, in 2007, was Carin Lundin. You can find more information at www.digmusic.se and at Carin’s website: www.carinlundin.com
- A New Orleans photo exhibition is recently presented. It shows streets and buildings as they were to be seen in the years just before and after 1900.
- A CD, “Jazz for New Orleans”, has been recorded at the museum for free by four orchestras; Gota River Jazzmen, Barfota Jazzmen, Jesse Lindgren New Orleans Orchestra and Tuxedo Jazzband & Rolf Carvenius. The selling of this CD has been successful and more than SEK 200.000 (USD 30. 000) have been sent to help jazz musicians in need in New Orleans. Robert Josephsson has taken the initative to the project and he is also its organizer.
The first CD as a tribute to the museum is sold out. But a second CD has been produced by Mr Dag Häggqvist of Gazell Records and it is now for sale. It consists of a large number of prominent Swedish artists and nearly all of them have performed at the museum. The profit of the CD is going to the jazz museum.
- You can order CD:s, consert program and make reservations by e-mail at info@jazzmuseum.com or by telephone (0046) 0220-433 30. The concerts will be announced at this website as the booking of them proceeds.
